As 2018 draws to a close, the time has come to take a look ahead at the year of fashion that lies before us, particularly as it pertains to hair. This year saw some fascinating and stylish trends in the world of cosmetology, and while some of those trends may carry on into the New Year in some form or another, stylists at the Cutting Lounge look forward to seeing these exciting new updo hairstyles for women take hold.
Here is a look at some of the trends we expect to see become increasingly popular once the calendar rolls over to 2019:

‘90s Accessories

This past year, we have seen a huge return to several accessories that originally were made popular in the 1990s. As is the case with fashion, history always repeats itself, and we have seen that start already with a return to everything from scrunchies to banana clips, but we are seeing more and more these get classed up and added to more hairstyles for special occasions. Yes, even stretch combs could have a home in formal hairstyles in 2019.

Top-Knots

The top-knot has made a huge comeback over the course of the last couple of years, but the most recent trend involving the low-maintenance updo is the messy twist, which makes it look as though it was thrown together (albeit flawlessly) in just a few motions.

1960s Throwback Styles

The 1990s aren’t the only decade that could see a hairstyle resurgence in 2019. Blowouts and bobs—especially of the style women wore in the 1960s—also are increasingly popular for formal occasions. All the things that made Jackie Kennedy beautiful 50 years ago can make women beautiful today.

Creative Braids

To say that braids will be popular in 2019 is like saying that braids are popular in every other year. There always are ways to work braids into updo styles, but these days the preference is leaning toward more creative braid-focused styles. They can be thin or thick, split or twisted into a crown, but people are more interested in creative, unique styles involving braids than they ever have been.

Rebellious Updo Styles

The 1980s were not completely absent from this past year’s most important hair trends, but we likely will see a further evolution of some of that punk-rock style in 2019 with an extension to grungier, rebellious updo styles. If it requires a lot of hairspray, mousse, and/or gel, there is a good chance it will be precisely the sort of renegade look that certain woman are looking for.

The holiday season is rife with Christmas parties, church events, and family gatherings, which means women attending these festivities often are expected to sport hairstyles that are appropriate for the circumstances. Low Knot with Side Twists

This particular updo is both creative and sophisticated, as it runs a number of side twists along the side of the head and wraps the remaining hair into a low knot at the base of the neck. We’ve seen a lot of women add jewels and other decorative elements to this style to jazz it up, and during the winter season there are some gorgeous color schemes you could work into those twists

Side Braid with Wavy Pony

This is one of those hairstyles for special occasions that looks simply beautiful, especially with a lighter-colored dress or outfit. The side braid runs the length of one side of the head and the wavy ponytail rests over the shoulder on that same side. It adds some height to the hairstyle and really looks lovely

Modernized Retro Updo

Retro updo hairstyles are en vogue right now, and this messy beehive pulls the hair up off of your neck but also adds a hairpiece and side bangs to feminize the look. It looks like something from The Great Gatsby era, but with a modern twist

Textured Middle Bun

This is one of the loveliest, most festive hairstyles we can offer here at The Cutting Lounge at Christmas time. It’s another updo, but it pulls the hair back and shapes it into a gorgeous textured bun at the back of the head, with tendrils framing the face on either side. As with these other styles, it can accommodate some embellishments to make it look even more specific to the holiday season

Christmas Tree Braid with Ribbon

While this particular hairstyle may be more appropriate for younger holiday-goers, it doesn’t make it any less adorable. Simply run a couple of braids down the back of the head at an angle, forming an upside-down “V” at the crown, then weave green ribbon in between the two braids in the shape of a Christmas tree. It’s a really cute look for kids looking to break free of the typical ponytail or down-do at Christmas time.

In a general sense, updos are most often associated with formal events like weddings or dances, but the setting may call for a softer, looser style. Half-up/half-down updos are especially versatile, as they can look formal or more laid back depending on the clothing that accompanies them.
Here at the Cutting Lounge, our stylists can put together a number of different hybrid updos for any occasion, and the following are some of the most popular requests we receive:

Fishtail Braid Half Updo

Fishbone braids look great in hair with highlights, but the look is incredibly classy regardless of hair color, as the thick braid twists back from the front into a “V” in the back. It’s tied off at the crown and then runs a fishtail braid down the rest of the back.

Braided Half Updo

There are other intricate braids that can work in similar ways, and there are some styles that allow for multiple braids along the top and sides of the head to keep hair out of your face and add some flourish to what would have been a standard hairstyle otherwise.

Braided Headband

There are a number of ways to do this style, but the idea is to create a faux headband by braiding one into the hair. You can locate the banded braid toward the front of your head or toward the back depending on your taste, but it’s a nice flourish.

French Braid Half Updo

Any French Braid can look great, but this one starts up high on one side and twists around in a “C” shape so that the entire back of the head is wrapped in a gravity-defying braid. Leave the hair under the braid loose to create the half updo.

Waterfall Braid

The waterfall braid is a gorgeous look that runs braids around the back of the head in ways that let the remaining hair tress down through the braids and make the hair flow beautifully and look longer than it is.

Half-Up Top Knot

For women with shoulder-length hair, this style runs braids down the top portion of the head, leading to a small messy knot at the crown, while the rest of the hair hangs naturally at the shoulders. It’s definitely a unique look that will stand out no matter what the occasion may be.

Celtic Knot

Like many other half-up, half-down styles on this list, the Celtic Knot takes advantage of some styling around the back of the head—a Celtic Knot, in this case—while the rest of the hair hangs down around the shoulders and the back.

By nature, shorter hairstyles for men and women are easier to deal with on a day-to-day basis. Anybody that ever has had long hair knows how much work goes into keeping it properly maintained, but for men in particular there are several different ways of styling shorter haircuts that are both low-maintenance and aesthetically pleasing. Cutting Lounge can be an ideal men’s hair salon, providing customers with precisely these types of low-maintenance styles.
The following are some of our favorites:

Taper Fade

A classic taper cut is one of the most classic and low-maintenance hairstyles possible for men, as it keeps the sides and back of the hair relatively short and the top a little longer to be styled or parted. The taper fade is a little more dramatic but still a trendy, popular men’s haircut right now. Here, the stylist will cut the sides and back a little shorter, fading the hair closest near the neckline. The top, meanwhile, is left long enough for styling with gel.

Butch Cut

For people that want to go really low maintenance, the butch cut is a great way to go about doing that without completely shaving their head. This cut uses a medium-length clipper setting so the hair still looks purposefully neat and well-maintained, but it won’t require much by way of styling and doesn’t go as short as a military cut.

Ivy League Cut

Think of the Ivy League cut as a more professional, higher-end version of the simple crew cut. The top of the hair is cut short, but left long enough to allow for a part. It’s a little tighter than a classic taper and does well with men who have longer, more angular faces. A little gel can give the top of the head that “organized-but-messy” look that so many celebrities have long since perfected.

Regulation Cut

This is a very popular style at the moment, with the top left quite a bit longer, leaving up to two inches of length for styling, while the back of the hair fades until it gradually disappears into the skin. The top is left long enough to part, but the rest of the hair is so short it requires no real maintenance at all beyond shampooing. Textured Styling

For men that have slightly longer, straighter hair on top, using some gel to give the hair some texture is a great way to style hair with very little effort. The good news is that there are so many ways to arrange them more formally for a wedding. It’s quick and easy to put together, yet it still looks classy and sophisticated.

​High Knot Chignon

This style pulls the hair to the top of the head by wrapping a ponytail around its base before fanning it out a bit and pinning it into place. It keeps hair out of the bridesmaids’ faces and off of their necks, and since it’s a more durable style it isn’t likely to come loose over the course of the night.

Swept French Twist

For a swept French Twist, stylists sweep the bulk of a bridesmaid’s hair to one side and then run a gorgeous French Twist braid down the length of the hair. While it isn’t ideal for women with shorter hair, it can look great if all your bridesmaids have longer locks with which to work. If it works for Disney’s Elsa, it can work for anybody, right?

Soft Beach Waves

Not all bridesmaid looks have to be fancy updos. Women that would rather wear their hair down—especially for an outdoor or beach wedding—will love this look. The natural-looking curls hanging over the shoulder goes great with nearly any style of dress.

Soft Knots

Spiky Pixie Cut

If you’ve seen Katy Perry at all over the course of the last several months, you know that she’s been rocking a spiky pixie cut that is low-maintenance and edgy. It also is easy to wash and style, requiring only a small amount of hair gel to pull up the rogue strands. It keeps heavy hair off your neck in the warmer months and is a trendy look at the moment, thanks in large part to Perry.

Two-Toned Blonde

Plenty of celebrities are using the warmer months to go blonde, which isn’t unique to 2018 but is something we’ve seen from the likes of Selena Gomez. Her hair specifically blends her natural color at the roots into the color itself. Blonde and silver-gray are the most popular dye colors at the moment, but keeping a touch of root dark in the first place makes the look more natural, especially as it grows out.

Midi Cut

Somewhere in between a hot head of super long hair and a completely shorn look is the midi cut, which rests somewhere around the shoulder blades as a happy medium. It’s long enough to make a pony tail, but short enough so as not to be quite so hot. As the name suggestions, it is a perfect compromise for length.

Fake Bangs

Any woman knows that bangs are a huge commitment, but stylists have discovered a way to drape hair from the back of a woman’s head over to the front so that it’s styled to create the appearance of bangs. Faux Perms

As adults that have gotten their hair cut dozens of times, visiting the barber or salon is part of our routine. We know the drill, so we seat ourselves, welcome the thin nylon cape around our neck, and participate in typical hairdresser/client conversation. It is one of the easiest things in the world to sit and do nothing while someone makes you look your best.
For toddlers heading into a salon or barber shop for the first time, however, this process is anything but routine. Being asked to sit still while some stranger with pointy sheers makes their way toward their face can be overwhelming for some kids. Here at the Cutting Lounge, we want your child’s first haircut to be an easy, memorable one, so to ensure that happens, please consider the following tips for your own kid’s haircut debut:

#1 Get Them Familiar with the Hairdresser

One thing you can do to help settle your child ahead of their first haircut is to get them familiar with the building and the person who will be doing the cutting. If there’s an older sibling, take the toddler along for a few haircuts in a row to watch their big brother or sister and get used to the routine. If there is no older sibling, take them with you when you get your haircut. Familiarity can take a lot of anxiety out of the situation.

#2 Choose the Right Time

Most toddlers have times of day when they are in great moods and other times of day when they don’t perform quite so well. It’s better to get them in for a haircut first thing in the morning or right after naptime so they aren’t hungry, tired, and crabby when it comes time to sit in the chair.

#3 Distract and Occupy

The more distracted a kid is, the less likely it is that they will melt down during their haircut. Toys, books, and pacifiers are great distractors, and some families even bring in little snacks because they know their kid will sit still as long as they’ve got food in their mouth. Even if you have a “no screens” policy at home, a smartphone or tablet can help distract them, too. A first haircut may be a lone exception to that policy.

#4 Bring a Change of Clothes

Not every kid wants to wear the cape, so letting them wear their normal clothes for the cut and just changing them into different clothes after the cut is fairly common for parents.

#5 Offer a Treat

Let your child know that if they are well-behaved through the entire haircut, they can receive some sort of treat at the end of it. This won’t be something you want to do every time so that they expect treats after every haircut, but for the first one there is nothing wrong with dangling a sucker or cookie in front of them for good behavior.
